Nigeria was the world's best stock market — then it slipped to third

For five weeks the NGX was the best-performing stock market on earth. Then South Korea and Ghana edged ahead — by barely three points. Here's what happened, and what it means for you.

From nowhere to world number one

For about five weeks this summer, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) wore a crown no Nigerian market had worn before: the best-performing stock market in the world in US-dollar terms.[1][2] By early July, the NGX All-Share Index had returned roughly 67% in dollars for the year, nudging past South Korea to take the global top spot.[1]

Then, just as quickly, the crown slipped. South Korea and Ghana both edged ahead, pushing Nigeria down to third place globally.[3][4]

A photo finish, not a crash

This is not a story of a market falling apart. The three finished the stretch within a whisker of each other, measured by dollar return for the year:[4]

  • 🥇 South Korea (KOSPI) — +68.52%
  • 🥈 Ghana (GSE) — +66.68%
  • 🥉 Nigeria (NGX) — +65.23%

Just over three percentage points separate first from third. Nigeria didn't fall — its rivals simply ran a little faster.

Why Nigeria surged in the first place

The NGX rally was built on real improvements, not hype:[1][5]

  • A calmer naira. The currency had firmed about 4% against the dollar since January, and FX liquidity improved — which matters, because these global rankings are measured in dollars.[1]
  • Reform momentum and firmer oil, which steadied the macro picture and drew foreign interest.[1]
  • Bank recapitalisation. Financial-services stocks led as banks raised fresh capital, and total market value swelled to about ₦155 trillion.[1]
  • A nod from the index-makers: S&P Dow Jones placed Nigeria on a 2027 watchlist for a possible frontier-market reclassification — a signal that can pull in more foreign money.[1]

By mid-year the NGX was already Africa's second-best performer, up 47.4% in the first half alone.[5]

Why South Korea and Ghana pulled ahead

South Korea roared back on a memory-chip supercycle. Heavyweights like Samsung and SK Hynix rode surging AI-driven demand, and the KOSPI roughly doubled in 2026 — its strongest run in decades.[6][7] When Korea's chip giants rally, the whole index moves with them.

Ghana rode a different engine: gold. As a major producer, Ghana gained from strong bullion prices, a stable cedi, easing inflation and supportive central-bank policy, plus fresh listings. The GSE climbed about 73% for the year to become Africa's top market.[8]

What it means for you

Three quick lessons for the everyday NGX investor:

  • Currency is half the story. These league tables are in dollars. A steady naira turned strong local gains into world-beating dollar returns — and any naira wobble can flip the table just as fast.[1]
  • Rankings are noisy; fundamentals aren't. Three points decide a "1st vs 3rd" headline. Don't confuse a leaderboard slot with the health of the companies you actually own.
  • Third in the world is still remarkable. Nigeria beating every major market except two is a genuinely strong year for the NGX — and a measure of how far reforms have moved sentiment.[4]

The takeaway isn't "buy" or "sell" — it's perspective. Nigeria's market had a historic run, and the leaderboard will keep shuffling. Track the fundamentals, keep an eye on the naira, and let the headlines be headlines.
